Dots

Dots

Just in case you are running out of ways to waste time and distract yourself, Facet’s App of the Week is another addictive distraction. The game is called Dots and it is available for free through iTunes and the Google Play Store.

The objective of Dots is easy; connect as many of the same colored dots as you can in 60 seconds. If you want to add a competitive edge to the game, include your friends through Facebook and Twitter to compare high scores. Dots now offers an untimed game to help you practice your strategic moves when playing competitively or timed. Each dot you earn can be used to gain a “Power Up” that if used correctly, can have a big impact on your score.

Whether or not you are looking for a new way to pass time or are getting bored with your other apps, give Dots a chance and you will be addicted in no time.

Tech Tip of the Week

Great weather for a drive in the car with the windows down and sun shining. Especially with Bluetooth streaming audio equipped in so many automobiles, it makes finding the perfect tunes or entertainment for those road trips just that much more convenient. So many apps to choose from like Pandora, iHeart Radio, Google Music, and now iTunes Radio, everyone is sure to find something they want to hear. Our tech tip this week is not to get a speeding ticket while you’re jamming out to your tunes from your portable device and cruising down the roads! Easier said than done for some of us, but if you use that same device to plan out a route using your Google Maps or Maps App, and enjoy the trip, everyone should arrive at the destination safely without breaking any laws.

Fall is fast approaching, and it's a great time to be outside and use that technology to capture some great memories. Portable devices have made leaps and bounds in the quality of the cameras and video recording. Most are now capable of recording High-Definition video and take great still pictures at high resolutions for later editing if needed. Also, we can now use our portable devices in those home improvement projects before winter arrives! Many home improvement stores have apps that are available to track your projects and purchases so you can always be sure to get the right equipment for the right job. Remember when you're grabbing the hoodie and marshmallows for the bonfire, or headed out for supplies on a sunny Saturday morning, take your portable device along. We never know when we might need to snap a picture or grab a video to be shared later with friends and family.

NFL Mobile

NFL

NFL Mobile is the newest app available for the 2013 NFL Football Season and is available for free through iTunes and the Google Play Store. NFL Mobile enables users to check up to the minute scores from NFL teams around the league. Get customized team alerts and follow your favorite teams. Team alerts include injury updates, highlights, game start times, entry in the red zone, and scoring plays. Also, check out team standings, stats, rosters, and schedules. NFL Mobile also created a way for you to follow your NFL.com fantasy teams through the app. NFL Mobile still has a few bugs to work out and hasn’t received the greatest of reviews (Android users are rating higher than Apple users), but generally the bugs get fixed fairly quickly. This app has the potential to be one of the best football apps this season.

Pop-Up Ads!

Tired of ads popping up while you’re surfing your favorite sites? Not sure if a site is considered safe and virus-free? Give “Ad-Block Plus” and “Web of Trust” (WOT) a try. Ad-Block Plus is a browser add-on or plug-in that will block pop-up advertisements that are often annoying and sometimes dangerous. Lately we've seen a lot of the “Flash Player Needs Updated” and they are malicious ads. Web of Trust (WOT) is an add-on / plug-in for your browser that will show the “risk” of certain websites in your search engine before you click on the link. The utility helps your decision when researching if you are going to a credible, non-threatening site with a good (or not so good) reputation. Be safe and happy surfing!

Google Hangouts

Google has created a place for you, your friends, and family to all keep in touch through group or individual chats. Turn any conversation into a video call and share pictures with all your friends and family. Google Hangouts is available for free through iTunes and the Google Play Store. Connect with your contacts through Hangouts using your computer, phones, and tablets.

Google Hangouts allows for video calls with up to 10 friends at once. Also, send messages to your contacts at anytime while they are offline. Google Hangouts alerts you when you have a new Hangout request, but does not send repeated alerts for the same Hangout. If you do not want to be interrupted with Hangout requests, snooze your notifications. Hangouts also lets you see when people are together in Hangouts, when they are typing, or if they have seen your message. One of the best features of Hangouts is the syncing across your devices. You can start and continue any of your Hangouts from any device.

Keep up with your friends and family with one of the best messaging apps out there.

Deals on the horizon

Just a subtle reminder to any electronics consumers out there (myself included): Deals on the horizon! School is back in session, as soon as this last blast of summer heat passes, it will cool into fall. However, that means new electronics for the Christmas shopping season! As a fellow bargain shopper (when it comes to techy items) keep an eye out for clearance and closeouts on this year’s models of equipment. Laptops, digital cameras, game systems, PCs, tablets, even some smartphones. 2014 should be an interesting year with all the new changes on the forefront with the big software developers – Microsoft, Android, Apple, etc. Be on the lookout for hot new portable technology that you may want to integrate into your daily life!

Google Keep

Google-Keep-Logo-2

Google Keep is the latest electronic note taker and event reminder app available for Android users. An app for Apple users isn't yet available. Google Keep is available for free in the Google Play Store.

Google Keep lets you keep track of your thoughts through notes, lists, and photos. Create multiple notes and lists to help keep track of things you don’t want to forget or important events. Turn your notes into a checklist by customizing it and adding check boxes. Google Keep also lets you add reminders to notes or lists that have time sensitive activities. To help organize your notes and lists, Google Keep lets you add color coding to make them easier to sort through. Another great feature to Google Keep is the ability to take voice notes that can automatically be transcribed for you.

To fully understand how beneficial Google Keep can be to your daily life, you have to try it for yourself. In the mean time, we will keep an eye out for when this app becomes available to Apple users.

Support Your Local Nerd

Support Your Local Nerd! Lately a lot of fraudulent companies are posing as “remote tech support” or other reputable companies and taking advantage of unknowing consumers and getting logged onto their machines and finding “errors” which typically don’t mean much of anything. However, they use those as scare tactics to lure us into paying for their service which fixes nothing, and can even make problems worse, or lock you out of your PC entirely. While we are big supporters of the convenience of remote support and often recommend it depending upon the situation, sometimes issues cannot be resolved remotely. When you support your local nerd, you can get remote support, or in-shop or on-site support. The two biggest advantages of this would be that you get prompt, friendly, knowledgeable individuals who can answer questions without reading from a script; also if you have compounding issues or other problems, the local nerds will be available! We’ve covered “getting what you pay for” , and some of this tech tip goes along well with that principle. You may see more upfront cost, however you will be much happier for a much longer time when supporting your local nerd.

Randy V.

I am a common small business person. Like everyone I have multiple computers and lap tops that interface with a number of email accounts and printers. I compare pricing points with the big box outlets when upgrading then I wind up going over to Facet because their price is the same or even better. I must have computer back up assistance equal to the big business in the area. It is not common to have the quality, timeliness, sales, and ability to rapidly trouble shoot and FIX any problem that I toss at those folks.

Being a customer of Facet is like having a highly skilled, highly talented computer programming professional on my own staff! No benefit is equal to the satisfaction of having a Facet Technician solve a computer problem that is taking all production down. I know there are other computer services in the area, but I seriously doubt other services have the skill and competence and the availability to serve common small and larger business.
