Be very careful opening attachments from your e-mail. Even if it’s from someone you know or trust. Always make sure it’s a safe file and not questionable. The “crypto-locker” virus is very active still and even more infectious. It tends to infect a machine after opening an attachment in a fraudulent e-mail. Once infected, it will encrypt your files on your machine and spread across any other machines on the network and encrypt their files as well. These files often cannot be retrieved, and are permanently lost. Unfortunately, there are many other viruses that act similar and are just as infectious. Keeping a close eye on e-mail is paramount in keeping your machine safe from threats.
A reminder for replacing your Windows XP computer: don’t skimp on the details! As a “nerd-in-the-know” I definitely recommend an Intel processor (Pentium, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7), and a good amount of ram (4gb is a good start). Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 are all viable options for operating systems, unless you’re going to Apple, in which case OS X 10.9 “Mavericks” is the latest and greatest. Storage space is relatively inexpensive these days, so the cost difference between a 500gb and 1TB (terabyte) isn’t too far apart. Remember that if you want the machine to last you as long or longer than your previous machine did, sometimes the golden rule is “you get what you pay for”. Meaning, a bit of a higher price tag means much more ease of use, and a much longer life and warranty. However, I’m not sure anyone will see this, since it’s so nice outside today! Enjoy the day and enjoy the new technology!
We’ve mentioned before how important it is to update supporting software along with Windows updates, such as Adobe Flash Player, Java, Adobe Reader, etc. We would like to focus this week on fraudulent attempts by malicious websites to update “lookalike” programs which are actually virus or spyware in disguise. We’ve seen where an “update media player” pop-up will redirect to another unknown website asking to download to view the video or game you may be trying to find. Unless you can verify where the file is coming from or know the website is trusted, be careful when updating your support programs. Once installed, the programs can seem to act legitimate, however they may be doing quite a bit of damage behind the scenes, and you may not know until it’s too late. Be careful surfing out there this spring!
With the temperatures rising, it appears we’re seeing another wave of fraudulent virus removal services from people claim to be from Microsoft or other reputable technology companies. Please be aware, as these callers can be very convincing and will even ask you to connect to them so that they may fix or repair the viruses or issues you’re having, when in fact they will do the opposite and only cause more damage up to possibly crashing the machine entirely. It is highly recommended to find someone you trust that you’ve worked with before if you have PC issues. It’s always better to ask a company you trust than to have to lose any data or money to a fraud.
Hopefully over the holiday weekend, we were all able to give thanks to someone in the armed forces, as well as enjoy some downtime with family and friends. What we’d like to mention this week is how the right tunes and music can really get the spirit going for your outdoor and indoor summer activities! With such great options in the “wireless home audio” arena, everyone can find something that will suit their listening environment and budget. Highly recommended solutions like SONOS and BOSE are best matched to the task, however there are others as well. Nothing goes together better with summer and fun than good music to pull it all together! Let’s get those anthems playing and enjoy the summer fun!

If anyone ever tells you Macs don’t get infected with a virus or spyware, it is incorrect The reason that this becomes so widely accepted is that the majority or computers used to be Windows-based. However, more and more people and business are buying Apple, so that means a bigger number of targets for virus and malware producers. Lately we’ve seen the “FBI Virus” on quite a few Apple machines – laptops and desktops alike. The “FBI Virus” is the ransom-ware that attempts to hold your machine hostage until you pay a ransom, otherwise the FBI or other agencies will arrest you or fine you. These have been around quite some time, however they are increasingly more common in Mac OS devices. Always remember to keep a good antivirus solution installed, even on your Mac!
